I was wondering why people from the north call us southerners "Red-Necks" it could be considered offensive to some of us also not all of us spend all day outside, hunt, drink sweet tea, tailgate, watch football, eat fried chicken and are racially prejudiced.
In the polls you thought we did all of the above which is not true
Isn't that what you see in the movies right? Ha but yeah when we asked you if you guys drank sweet tea you all raised your hands.. and the survey we didn't know it was just a guess. But how is spending time outside, hunting, tailgating, watching football, and eating chicken offensive? So thats what I have to say!
I don't think that a a lot of Michiganders call Southerners "Red-Necks" but some do. They most likely aren't informed well and they probably base their opinions on stereotypes. We also are really into football, hunting, tailgating, etc..Although I think's it more likely for you guys to drink sweet tea, listen to country and do a few other things because that's how you were born and raised, it doesn't make you a "Red-Neck".
I think it is because people conceive you as being outside all the time. Personally I think The term "Red-Necks" isn't a bad thing, All the things that you listed are what a lot of us do here in Michigan quite often...
We really don't talk about you guys like that. We don't go out of our way just to say "Oh, southerners are rednecks," Like even if we did talk about southerners most people do not call you guys rednecks. I didn't even know people did until this project.
Not everybody in the North calls you guys " Red-Necks" I think that's a stereotype. And most people that do call you guys Red-Necks probably don't know what they're talking about. I also think that being a Red-Neck isn't bad and that it's just a stereotype that we in the North think is bad but it really isn't.
I am not for sure of this, but I'm assuming some of us northerners (not all of us), refer to southerners as rednecks because we see it in movies and through society I guess. In movies, people from the south are usually portrayed as a person sitting on their porch drinking sweet tea or something like that. I specifically don't refer to you as rednecks, but that's just my opinion... I cannot speak for everyone.
It really comes down to the person, I don't really see anything wrong with someone being a redneck, it is just how you were raised, I also do not really get the point of this project because just because you live in a different state does not mean that our personality traits are different, I would be mad at myself if I ever said a stereotype about you being a southerner because I do not see the point, its the individual not the state they live in.
I'm wondering, what kind of traditions do northerners have?
Well it's sometimes different for every family, but every year, my grandma takes all of the granddaughters she has to a different play around Christmas time. We have family reunions on special holidays like Thanksgiving, Cheistmas and Easter.
We have a lot of different traditions in the North. My family gets together on the holidays, and celebrates together. What do you guys do for traditions?
Every family is different and we all have different traditions. Basically everybody has different traditions.
Yeah Conner! That is true.
We have lots of traditions for winter holidays. Many people go up north for break with their families. And almost everyone celebrates Thanksgiving and Christmas Also its very common to sled and ski on snow days.
I enjoy sledding and skiing with friends and family. Before the holidays, I usually spend time with family before we leave on vacation. We normally go to Florida with family during winter break because my grandma has a condo down there. For spring break, we also go to Florida, but this time it's with friends.
Everyone has different traditions, but most are around Holidays. Most of us get together with are family's to eat and celebrate. For example: some people get a real christmas tree, and they've done it ever since they were young. Others, go to a certain family member's house every year for Thanksgiving. It really just all depends on the family.
We have many traditions, mainly for the holidays but there are others too. It kinda depends on your family and stuff.
I think that each family has there on traditions. Like mine we have the same breakfast every christmas morning.
Some traditions I have are my family and I always have an early Thanksgiving in Chicago with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
All families have different kinds of tradition here. It just depends on what your family does.
We have similar traditions like christmas and thanksgiving and 4th of july. We have unique ones like hunting season and snowboarding and skiing.
Every family has their own traditions
In the winter we play in the snow and I personally every weekend hangout with family or friends. What kinds of traditions do southerners have?
A lot of families up here go skiing and snowboarding together.
My family gets a small present every day leading up to christmas.
Traditions vary from family to family but most of out traditions are around the holidays. A tradition that I have is every Christmas Eve My family and I go to my grandmas house. First we go to church and then we go back to my grandmas house and eat dinner and get each other presents and open them.
I was wondering how many people are in y'all's grade?
There are almost 300 students that are just in 8th grade.
At Mattawan we have a pretty large grade, we have over 300 people in our 8th grade.
There are a little over than 300 kids in our grade. How many kids are there in yours?
we have around 650 in our grade
We have about 300 people in each grade in middle school.
Yes, There are 2 teams in each grade. Each team has aprox. 150 kids in all of mattawan we have about 300 eighth graders.
In our grade there is around 300 kids and they are also adding on to a part of our Middle school. They are also building two new Elementary schools for the younger kids.
About 300 kids with two different teams with different teachers.
We have about 300 students in our grade and about 900 students in the middle school.
In our grade we have about 300 hundred kids in our grade. We have two teams and both the teams have about 150 kids on them.
There's about 260 in our grade.
We have around 350 students in the 8th grade
We have about 300 kids in are grade.
we have over 350 people in the 8th grade
Here in Mattawan have a little more than 300 students in our grade. We have a pretty large class here in Mattawan.
What makes you think that we are so racist
We don't necessarily think that you're racist. It's just a stereotype that some but not all people put on you guys. I personally don't think that you guys are racist
I was wondering how come your classes weren't as diverse as ours is, race wise, because we have a mixed variety of races at our school but I noticed that there wasn't as many as our school here in Auburn.
Our school does have a big variety of nationalities. On my team we have 5 English classes. Maybe the class you talked to didn't have a big mix of nationalities.
Actually, our classes are very mixed (religions, race, etc.) Maybe it was just that one specific class that wasn't very diverse, but for the school as a whole, I'd say we are pretty diverse. Plus I'd say most everyone in our school could agree with what I say, too.
I notice how your school is a lot bigger than ours so that may be the reason why. But we do have lot of different races it just depend on the class you were talking to.
Are the areas over there have more open land or are there more buildings that cover the land also how much snow do you get over there?
Well our school is right by a cow farm, and there are many corn fields and lots of open land in Mattawan. That changes once you get into the city. We usually get about 70 inches of snow each year.
In Mattawan we have more open land, but if you go outside of Mattawan to Kalamazoo or Portage there are many more buildings. We usually get at least 4-6ft of snow a year.
There is some open land but we mostly have buildings covering the land. Also we have usually about up to our knees of snow or sometimes even more.
Well there are some big cities like Detroit and Lansing, But there are some large open areas a lot of farms and woods. Bothe of my grandparents own 5 acres and my great grandpa owns 40 acres.
It depends on where you are in Michigan because some places has a lot more building's than others. Also we get a lot of snow.
We have a lot of open land around here. Each house has close to about and acre of land per house. We get about 4-6 ft of snow each year. Do have a lot of open land there?
We do but its on the edges of the town/county. Not in the middle of Auburn. And it is really only used for hunting, and mudding, and stuff like that not really for farming.
in Mattawan there a mostly farms and stuff and we get a bunch on snow
There is mostly open land and a lot of farms and grapes vines here. We also usually get around a foot or more of snow. We already have about 6 inches this year.
We have lots of buildings here but there are also lots of fields. The buildings are mainly spaced apart.
Mattawan is a pretty small town so yeah theres a decent amount of open land around. We usually get between about 45-75 inches of snow per year.
How warm does it usually get in the summer?
In the summertime here it can get really hot, and sometimes the temperature may go up into the 90s.
It can be very hot in the summer here, it depends on the year, some years are hot, and some years are cold. It can get that hot, typically it is only for 1 or 2 weeks in the 90's.
How cold does it get in the winter? And how long does it stay like that?
I was wondering how many of you like the block schedule you have. What is it like for you?
I was wondering about how many kids are in your grade. We have about 300.
we have around 650 in 8th grade
At the Auburn Junior High there are about 500-600 kids at our school that are eighth graders.
Tyler T. Where we live it is mostly farmland and the biggest city is Kalamazoo with a big downtown. We just got about 4-5 inches of snow and we have 3-4 months of snow on the way.
I was wondering, what are some of the popular sports in Auburn
Some popular sports are football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, and soccer.
Those are pretty much the same sports that are popular here.
Most of the boys play baseball, football, basketball, wrestling, soccer or lacrosse
Hi I was wondering why you think people in the north are more rude than people in the south? I think that is a major stereotype because there are a lot of nice people in the north. Also where you live doesn't affect how you act, the only thing that affects how you act is you.
I was wondering what most southerners do for fun? Sports or activities?
In MI, at this time of year, most people watch football and will start skiing/snowboarding this following weekend.
What are the big and main sports in your area? Do you spend time practicing them? Do you get to play your sport year round?

Do you guys live in the country or in neighborhoods? I don't live in the country but I don't live in a neighborhood either. I am curious if people in the south live in neighborhoods or not.
Yes we do live in neighborhoods, but some people also live in the country.
I love in a neighborhood, and most people here do. But because we live in a college town near campus there are a lot of streets with tiny houses that college kids will live in.
Thats a lot like how it is here. We mostly live in neighborhoods. But, when you go downtown kalamazoo there is 2 colleges so there is a lot of college students houses.
Have any of you ever seen snow, if so was it in the south, or in the north, also how much snow does it take for you to have a snow day, because we had 5-6 inches on Saturday, and went to school on Monday?
I have seen snow down here in the south. We had a snow day about 2 years ago here in Auburn. It really only takes there being a snow warning to be out of school because when we were in 6th grade there was supposed to be snow but nothing fell and we were still out of school.
How much snow do you typically get in the south during the winter? We typically get at least 1 foot of snow per winter. How much snow do you need for a snow day in the south?

Toomers Corner is a very famous corner of downtown. It has a bunch of oak trees that the people of Auburn love. It is tradition to go to the corner and try to throw toilet paper on the trees

A lot of people use Instagram, but we also use other apps as well. Although some people aren't allowed to have an app or two, they normally have at least one social media account.
Whats your guys top 3 favorite social media websites? Mine would have to be snapchat, instagram, and twitter
Those are also my favorite social media apps/websites! Not everyone has those 3, but I would say that the majority of our school uses those apps/websites as well.
Some things I am wondering is how big is Auburns population? Is Auburns town large, or small? Also, Do kids from all over go to Auburn schools or just kids from the community?
I would say that we have about 60,000 people in Auburn, that is an estimated number. Our town is definitely growing fast. There are constantly new stores, houses and apartments being built right now. I would also say that Auburn is old so they are trying to make it look pretty again. A lot of apartment complexes are being built, because of the growing student population at Auburn University. Only people who live in Auburn are able to go to schools in our district. There is also a private school in Auburn that some people go to as well.
I was wondering if skiing is popular near you? If so is it water or snow skiing that is more popular.
We live near many freshwater lakes so definitely water skiing. I personally like to wakeboard. I think snow skiing would be popular if we ever got snow

We have a block schedule. There are five blocks (four on Friday). Our classes are 90 minutes long except for when we have lunch. We have lunch during third block, so it is 120 minutes. Fourth block is only 30 minutes used as a time to watch the announcements and study or get homework done. We don't have fourth block on Fridays.

We do lots of thing like swimming and water sports. But skiing and snowboarding are one of our more common thing to do because we get lots of snow
What you're favorite

I was wondering if you guys have Culvers in Auburn.
Do you guys have Culver's in Auburn?
If we do have a Culver's in Auburn, then I'm not aware of it, but I don't think we have one.
The closest Culver's is about 5 hours away, but I wish we had one!! I ate Culver's when I was in Chicago a few years ago and I love it!!
Is your Baseball team good
Do y'all have travel baseball teams.
I am wondering if you ever have snow days? We get them a lot. Usually, we have to have a really big blizzard or the temperature has to be really cold for school to be cancelled.
We don't get snow days on a regular basis like y'all do. The only snow day that I remember in Auburn was 2 years ago.

What is your school like in general? ( Size, amount of people, etc.)
On the first day of school at AJHS, it was really hard to find our way around because it is so huge. In our 5th block Language class there are about 29ish people, and in the entire school(8th and 9th grade) there is around 8,000 students.
Like K-3rd is the early elementary and 3rd-5th is the later elementary at our schools just wondering how it is at your school.
3 years ago we built a new elementary school. We have 4, K-2 schools and 4, 3-5 schools that are paired together so kids stay with the same classmates. Our middle school is 6th and 7th grade, the Junior High is 8th and 9th grade and our High School is 10th through 12th. We're in the process of building a new high school which will change even more grades.
