I was surprised when they said that the still had recess. Y'all are luck I wish I had 30 minutes just to lay back and chill.
We have fifteen minutes for recess and fifteen for lunch
What surprised me the most was that the majority of the students were wearing some sort of long pants and sweatshirts. I was expecting to see shorts and t-shirts because Alabama is in the south and I thought it was warmer there.
i was surprised that you actually have places to hunt
We actually do, people wouldn't really picture it! A huge majority of people here hunt, a lot of us actually. I know that people really love it here. We also love to fish, seeing as we live near a ton of water. Love your comment, I would have thought the same thing. :)
People think its all big cities in the north but I actually live right next to a fruit farm with acres and acres of nothing but trees
I was surprised they have recess.
Our recess is just 15 minutes of time to chill. Most of the time in the winter we can't even go outside because it's to cold or to icy.
I really surprised me that you guys prefer college football instead of pro football. I just always thought that the NFL was really big up there because college football is really popular down here in Alabama.
Something surprise me is the way ya'll talk
What part about our speech surprised you?
What surprised me was they don't say the word "yall" and that they don't say ma'm. Also, that they had more than 5 times they number of snow days we had last year.
I was surprised that a guy was wearing shorts and it was 30 degrees outside.
Sometimes people will even wear shorts and t-shirts under 20 degrees
We have adapted to the cold. It doesn't really bother most of us.
I'm surprised that the north students still have recess.
I recently moved from Fort Wayne, Indiana to Mattawan and at my old school, we only had lunch. No recess. I was surprised too when I found out Mattawan had recess.
Everything I heard during the teleconference wasn't exactly surprising except for the fact that they have recess.
We all have alot in common
I was really surprised that people in the north actually like sweat tea.
I was actually surprised that they have cows across the street from the school.
One of the girls in the north mentioned that one of the trends for girls was crop tops. That surprised me because when I think of a crop top I think you would wear it at a warm place. Is it warm enough to yall to wear a crop top, or was this person wrong and nobody wears crop tops?
Actually, in the Summer it gets quite hot. Probably not as hot in the south, but warm enough that we can be comfortable in shorts and tank tops a lot of the days in the Summer.
Usually, people wear coats over their shirts, and take off their coats for the rest of the day
No, we actually do wear them. Mostly in the summer, up here it gets pretty hot up here, sometimes in the 100's. But people still where them in fall as well.
What surprised me the most was how Northerners reacted to us asking about sweet tea. I know that many people in the North don't drink sweet tea but I didn't realize how many people didn't drink it and how much they didn't like it. In the south every restaurant you go to you will see sweet tea on the menu.
Honestly, every restaurant you go to here has sweet tea on the menu as well. I know you guys wouldn't think we like sweet tea here but I know a lot of people like it a lot.
Something that surprised me about the teleconference was that it wasn't mixed race like we have in the South.
Most schools around our area have mixed race
Actually we are mixed raced. Some schools more than others, like here we don't have as much of it but if you go to a school near us that could be different.
I'm surprised that there's no Chick-fil-A in Michigan cause almost everyone here loves Chick-fil-A.
I was surpassed that you guys go to school earlier in the year than us.
I was suprised on how much you guys drink sweet tea compared to us Northerners!
I was surprised that there is one kid without an accent. They play sports like ours. They have A huge school. They know what lacrosse is.
What surprised me the most is your classes and how you have a class for half of the year.
Something that surprised me was when we asked who liked sweet tea. One kid said they didn't like sweet tea.
For how big your class time is, I was surprised why the amount of students are not very big.
I'm surprised that you guys had 3 snow days last year, because I thought you would'nt have any. Why did you have the snow days and when?
We have snow days when there is like 1cm of snow because people down here r scared of snow and REALLY don't like driving in it..
We don't just have snow days because of school, we have days where there is no precipitation at all, so they really shouldn't be called snow days but called "Acts of God", sometimes we have no school because of winds, or low temperature, or sickness.
I'm surprised on how your class schedule is. The reason is because of how your class hours are and work.
I'm surprised you have 90 min classes because, i have always had 50 min classes
What surprised me is when the class said that they could eat wings in their lunch room.
It surprised me that they said ma'm and sir quite a lot, because here it is used to say that someone is old in a respectful way.
I was surprised that 1 person went to their grandparents every sunday to visit their family because I don't get to see my cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents a lot. My family is spread out but not out of state.
I was surprised that we had a larger class than they did. We may have been told that they would have a smaller class, but being in a larger class normally, I assumed they would have the same sized class.
I was surprised about a lot of things, but the most surprising comment was that your classes was so much longer then ours and when you start and end school is so much more different then ours.
One thing that surprised me was that they were in a library, as we were in a classroom. I was also surprised that the Auburn students didn't have as much of an accent that I thought they would of had.
Two things I am now wandering, how big is Auburn's school (structure wise) and how popular is Auburn?
Auburn school is not super big but nor is it small and the auburn school district is very good compared to some other schools in Alabama :)
What I have noticed is that the students at Auburn did not speak as southern as I thought the students would. It surprising because I have meet a lot of people from the southern, like my family, and they speech very southern like.
I was kind of surprised that we mostly wear the same clothes (name brands)
One thing that surprises me is how much we are similar. Like the way we dress.
I was surprised that they had a subway like bar at their school and that they have 50 minute classes and we have 90 minute classes I thought we would have the same amount of time and classes.
Subway is not actually in our school. Its like a 5 minute walk to get there, but its worth is and a lot of people go eat there after school. And I can't even imagine having 90 minute classes, that seems way too long. 50 minute classes to me feel like, I can't imagine how you guys feel.
I was surprised that they live in neighbor hoods more than apartment.
Here in Mattawan Michigan, we do usually live in neighborhoods. Sometimes in other cities, such as Detroit, there people that live in apartments. Now in other big cities, such as New York and Chicago, there are apartments everywhere. Usually they will buy as much land for the least money, then build up. It's how they get the most out of the least.
I was surprised that we live in more suburbs and they live in more farm old houses than us.
I was personally surprised by the fact that there aren't many school sports, and just how cold it gets.
Actually there is A TON of school sports. Like during football season everybody goes to the games. We also play soccer, lacrosse, basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, baseball, hockey, and some more. And all of these sports are very popular and well known by everybody.
What surprised me was the amount of Northerners raised their hand when we asked who drinks sweet tea. But what really surprised me the most was when some of them said they have never tried sweet tea!
i was surprised by how many of people liked sweet tea in the north
I'm surprised most of you guys weren't wearing coats,as you said it was about thirty degrees there. I mean, I wear my hoodies almost all year.
what I noticed that they didn't have tea before
What surprised me about the video chat the most is the lunch because in Auburn the lunches are terrible and cold pretty much all the time. So claps to Michigan for the amazing lunch. A little jealous.
Hahaha. I wouldn't say that our lunches are amazing but they're okay. I know the very popular one is popcorn chicken. Its pretty much little chicken pieces in a bowl with mashed potatoes that you can add toppings to. Also we have Izzes which are pretty much like pop but they are a lot healthier for you, but they taste amazing. And we can also buy chip bags, fruit rolls up, beef jerkey, and even cookies.
I'm surprised y'all still have recess i wish we had had it to :) .
the thing that surprised me the most is that a lot of yall drink sweet tea
what surprised me is what is on you all lunch menu.
I was surprised that they really walk on ice and fish.
Oh yeah, we ice fish. Especially the people who live on lakes like a lot of the people here. Its pretty much when you walk out far on a lake and cut a hole through the ice. Then you just fish from that hole, suprisingly you can get a lot of fish that way.
I was surprised by how the northerners thought that we all lived on farm land, majority of us don't.
I was surprised that they actually asked us how much sweet tea we drink in a day.
I was surprised that you have fishing as a school sport! We have lakes around us and don't have have fishing as a school sport.
I was really surprised by all the sport questions Auburn had to ask and why?
I am surprised that there is no lakes near your school?
I am surprised that most of the kids weren't white. There was a mix of culture.
I was surprised by you having your backpacks in class. We put ours in our lockers in the hallway.
I was surprised that you didn't have to get permission from your teacher to leave the class. Before we leave every class, even if there was a bell, we have to wait for our teachers to let us know we can leave.
Something that surprised me was, at their lunch they get served hot wings, fajitas, and pizza, etc. This surprised me because I thought they would have more of a variety like how we have a sub line and two different hot food lines.
I was surprised to have to listen harder to hear everyone's voices. It wasn't the computer, I was surprised to see Southerners be a little quiet and shy.
I am surprised that you guys think that out sweet tea is just sugar poured into regular tea.
It was very surprising to see how much most of the AJHS students enjoyed talking about sweet tea.
I think it was funny yet weird how no one argued about the tea. Its sweet down here and up there.... not so much
I was really surprised that they think of cities when they here "North" we live in neighborhoods and we have farms around us, But we do have cities around Kalamazoo
I was very surprised that you guys weren't wearing shorts or t-shirts since it was 73 degrees down there the other day! I know I would be!
One thing that surprised me was the size of your class. Since in the survey you had 82 responses I thought your class size would be smaller than ours, when they seem about the same size.
I was surprised that you use the word "y'all" so much
One thing that surprised me was that Auburn still has five blocks, even though each class is 90 minutes long. I was surprised because at Mattawan, we are able to fit in seven hours, with each class being 55 minutes long, and Auburns' class periods are almost double ours, but they can still fit in five hours.
Something that surprised me was that they have some 90 minute classes and here we don't have that much time in are classes.
What really surprised me was the schedule. Yeah, I was expecting a different schedule from ours, but the schedule that you have is REALLY different from ours! I wasn't really expecting four 90-minute classes I just found it kind of surprising that your schedules differ so much from ours.
I thought that was surprising to me was that you guys have 90 minute blocks but also only have five classes. Unlike us were we have 45-50 minute classes and have seven different hours.
I was really surprised to see the videos and have most of the people not speaking in a southern accent. When I think of people in Alabama, I think of all of you guys speaking in a thick southern accent, and it turns out that isn't true. So my question is people in Michigan find southern accents really cool and different, do you feel the same about our accent?
What surprised me was how different our two schools schedules are. At Mattawan we take the same 7 classes every day and they are all about 50 minutes. Auburn does not have seven hours and they don't take gym everyday like we do. Also Auburns classes are around 90 minutes. Our hours are only about half that.
I was a little surprised that 4 to 5 hours away from water to Auburn Junior High is close. I just feels weird to us here in Mattawan because we live basically in the middle of a bunch of water. The longest you'd have to travel to get to water in Michigan is an hour at the most.
I was surprised at how different our schedules are. Our classes are really short compared to the classes at Auburn. We also have our encore or elective classes in which we sort of have a choice of what we take for the year and semester. We also don't really have a study hall like the students at Auburn do, but we do have wrap-up to finish the day.
We also have a choice of a class, we can pick either a foreign language class, art, theatre, band, or choir class.
I found it surprising that you guys have found 4-5 hours to the coast close. We have the ability to go anywhere here and find water. We live about 45 minuets from a large body of water known as Lake Michigan.
I'm extremely surprised that you think of the coast and lake shores as close! Living in Michigan, no matter where you are in the state there is an inland lake within 10 to 15 minutes away. In order to get to big water, or the Great Lakes, it takes us a maximum of one hour to get there from Mattawan.
When you were explaining your sweet tea I was surprised how much sugar you put in it.
The thing that surprised me was that you have 90 minute classes and ours are only 45 minutes each. The other thing is that we have more of a variety for lunch than you guys which I found weird
I was surprised when the students said "blocks" instead of "classes or hours" because the northerners say "classes."
I am surprised at how long the classes are in the south and how they don't have recess, because we only have about 45 minute classes. I don't know how you can focus in a class so long.
I was surprised that most of the kids during the teleconference in the south were wearing long pants and sweatshirts. If we had 60 degree weather almost everyone would be shorts and short sleeve shirts.
Something that surprised me was the fact that there are the same fashion trends at both schools. Really did not expect that.
I was surprised when one of the boys said sweet tea and iced tea are different, I thought they were the same. :)
What really surprised me the most is that you guys don't get to go outside as much as we do, I was expecting that you guys would go outside all the time since it's so warm there.
One thing that surprised me was how everyone said “Yall”.
I was surprised how different their class schedules are compared to ours.
It surprised me that everybody was wearing long pants and sweatshirts.
So I was just curious what the temperature is on average this time of year.
What surprised me was how thick their accents were. I have been to North Carolina. Obviously it's farther north than Alabama geographically.
I'm surprised that the north says you guys and not y'all
I was surprised that ya'll still have recess, I stopped having recess in 5th grade.
I was surprised that on Auburns school website there is a way you can recommend books that the school should buy.
I was surprised how much our wardrobe was the same, like how you liked the same brands here.
*Be respectful.*Be clear.*Check your spelling.
